The
word was out! In a small Lancaster County farmhouse in Pennsylvania
the Hershey brothers were making the best ice cream available
anywhere. They were faced with the problem of supplying the ever
growing demand! Well, it didn't take long for that farmhouse to get
pretty crowded with all that ice cream making paraphernalia!
Harrisburg seemed a logical place to open a "real" manufacturing
facility. It was centrally located, making the monumental job of
delivering the perishable dessert just a little bit
easier.
In those early days the ice cream was packed in metal
lined wooden containers originally built by the Hershey brothers.
The "route salesmen" packed ice around the containers to guarantee
the freshness and quality of the ice cream, and set off on their
daily delivery rounds to ice cream parlors around Central
Pennsylvania.
Hershey's started then what has become
tradition through the last ten decades: quality ice cream, superior
service for the dealers and a real value for the consumers.

The
Great Depression saw the birth of a new era. Hershey's became the
first manufacturer to offer pre-packaged pints of ice cream. Those
"carry-out" pints and half gallons started a whole new tradition in
the lives of all Americans.
The days
following World War II moved fast. People were on the run. Convenience and ease became household words.
Hershey's was on top of the situation with "On-a-stick" desserts.
Popscicles, ice cream sandwiches, SkiHi's - the novelty business was
born and bound for success!
Soon the familiar Hershey
Creamery trucks became a familiar sight. "Oh boy!! Hershey's Ice
Cream!" posters decorated soda fountain walls, and the familiar
orange and blue "Best of Everything" Hershey's Ice Cream Packages
lined store coolers and home ice-boxes everywhere.
America's
love affair with ice cream was growing, and so was Hershey's!
Expanding, modernizing, and always developing the new treats and
flavors to keep those ice cream lovers happy.
